Positioning, Navigation, and Timing (PNT)
Project Contributor: Peng Hu
Working to enable more reliable PNT services to support the growing need within lunar missions.
Open Lunar Impact
PNT enables our vision towards a portfolio of lunar utilities through shared infrastructure to support future lunar missions.
About the Project
This research is exploring approaches and designs for PNT, with the aim of developing a solution that can support the growing need within lunar missions that is unique and different / complementary to existing efforts built with Open Lunar values of creating open infrastructure.
About the Need
The increasing number of lunar missions has highlighted the current limitations on PNT for space exploration. Currently PNT is highly reliant on terrestrial/ earth orbital based systems, such as GNSS. The increase in lunar missions as well as their increasing complexity is further pronouncing these limitations, therefore demonstrating a need for a new solution to assist with PNT for lunar missions.
About the Solution
The research for PNT has commenced in January 2025, so is currently in its investigation phase. Open hopes to develop an outline for a potential solution later this year, and will update this page once there is more information.
